The North Carolina Zen Center is accepting applications beginning on December 1, 2016, for the position of Teacher/Abbot/Abbess.  Here you will find current, up-to-date information about the teacher search process and information for applicants, including links to application materials which may be downloaded.

Extension of Application Period — The period during which the Center will receive applications has been extended for one month, to the end of March.  Successive dates have been readjusted accordingly.

Those wishing to apply for the position should review the materials included below.  Also, please explore the website of the Center to get a general picture of the Center and its operations.  Inquiries may be forwarded by email to  The Applicant Search Brochure, which is linked below and downloadable as a .pdf, includes specific information for the first phase of the application process, including a list of materials which the applicant will need to submit in order to be considered for the position.

Application Process Schedule
The Application Process will proceed according to the following schedule.  Should deadlines be altered we will keep all applicants informed.

Phase One — Application Period
Opens December 1 — Closes March 31
During this period the Center will receive applications.

Phase Two — First Review
April 1 — May 31
During this period the Board and Search Committee will conduct an initial review of applicants. All applicants will receive notification of the results of this initial review.  Those who meet the initial requirements will be asked for a telephone interview during this period.

Phase Three — Formal Review
June 1 — July 31
Those applicants progressing beyond the First Review will be asked to visit the Center for interviews with the Board and Search Committee.  We will also request that the applicant attend at least one scheduled service and give a Dharma talk.

Phase Four — Final Review
August 1 — September 30
The Board and Search Committee will conduct a detailed review of the candidate(s) who have made it to this point.  Those applicants will be asked to return to the Center for a longer visit during this time period, ideally to come for at least a long weekend and conduct a short retreat period of perhaps 2 days.  At the end of this period the Board will make an official offer to an applicant.

Phase Five — Reach a Final Agreement
October 1 — November 30
The Center will expect to reach a final agreement with the successful applicant.  During this period final negotiations will be made to put in place a mutually beneficial arrangment whereby the applicant accepts the position of Teacher/Abbott of the North Carolina Zen Center.
